First Church celebrates the homecoming of the Pilgrim

Belmont, Mass. –
For nearly a year, worshippers at the Unitarian Universalist First Church on Concord Avenue have missed the bright morning sunshine streaming through the antique stained glass window in the chapel.
The window was removed for restoration in 2006 and the hole covered with plywood. This week, the parishioners welcome back their Pilgrim.

Artist adds a glass face to cathedral

Recently returned from teaching a masterclass at the Estonian Art Academy, stained glass artist Mark Angus is now exhibiting a striking series of “Reappearing Faces” at the Stained Glass Museum in Ely Cathedral. Each glass panel contains a human face in vibrant colourways, but they are archetypes rather than being based on real people. The [...]

Five artworks, five worlds

From puzzlement to awe: The latest installation at Tacoma Contemporary’s Woolworth Windows runs the reactional gamut. It features five very different installations by six artists, and some vastly different notions on the space involved.
First up, on the Theater District end of the Windows, is “Land-Structure-Impact,” a rather odd mock-up by Heather Joy and Matthew [...]

Art project connects generations

The generation gap was closed when Montgomery County youth and the elderly came together Aug. 3 to create a 22-foot mosaic in Silver Spring, weaving intergenerational life experiences into one large art piece at the Elizabeth House high-rise apartments.‘‘There’s a recognition that a lot of times seniors can be isolated from the community, but they [...]

Showcasing Millard Sheets, from canvas to curbside

NEXT month’s Los Angeles County Fair will provide a perfectly populist venue to mark the centennial of the birth of Millard Sheets, one of SoCal’s most prominent and accessible artists of the last century.  But don’t fret if you miss the exhibition amid the frivolity of deep-fried Twinkies and pig-racing contests. Sheets’ work remains on [...]

College student posts colorful creation

For most people, Post-it Notes are disposable, ordinary office papers used for note-taking and reminders. But for 19-year-old David Alvarez of Leavenworth, Washington, they were the perfect medium for a 10-foot-tall mosaic depicting Ray Charles. Using more than 2,000 of those ubiquitous brightly-colored sticky scraps, Alvarez composed a three-dimensional representation of the famous musician. The [...]

Tarp covers Tiger Spot Mosaic

The Tiger Spot still stubbornly adorns Lowry Mall but was covered during the summer with a school-spirited tarp. MU administration and student government officials said they do not know why it hasn’t been removed. Since the mosaic tiger, made from Italian glass tile, was revealed in October 2001, the school has spent almost $100,000 in [...]
