Library has sweet way to break a record ( US – IL)

Evergreen Park candy-covered mosaic to encourage kids to read banned books

Later this month, a group of about 10 Evergreen Park kids will gather to create a candy-covered mosaic of M&Ms in the hopes of making the Guinness Book of World Records. The project, which was the brainchild of library director Nicki Seidl, is just one of the programs the library is offering to draw junior high- and high school-aged youths into the library, Hajduk-Oster said. Older kids are busy with other opportunities at school and elsewhere, she said. “We try to think of fun activities – keep them reading and bring them into the library,” she said. The two-day event entails sorting by color more than 9,000 candies Sept. 21 and then building the L-shaped mosaic Sept. 22 at the library, 9400 S. Troy Ave. Hajduk-Oster said the Guinness Web site lists a variety of records that can be broken. If the students are successful, they will join the ranks of Ashrita Furman, who holds a record for walking 80.96 miles with a milk bottle balanced on her head, and Ali Bahcetepe, who broke 120 concrete blocks in 24.28 seconds, according to the Guinness Web site.
