Ancient art of mosaic given new life (New Zealand)

It has taken more than 50 years, but Con Kiernan has found his artistic niche.

“I like the bigness of the of the mosaic format. “It is an ancient art form that has stood the test of time.  “Some of the world’s significant art sites feature mosaic art. They astonish and uplift people.  “They encourage a sense of history creating a link between one age and another.”  The internationally-renowned artist only picked up mosaics in 2001 after careers in graphic art and adult education and a hobby of creating images of people and places using pen and ink in pointillism format.

The 66-year-old has since grasped the mosaic art form with both hands, earning praise from artists throughout the world for his works which include colourful and dynamic images of flax, pohutukawa and kowhai trees.
