Sue La Lond has created enough stained- glass pieces to fill several houses — her house, her children’s houses, her grandchildren’s houses.
“I enjoy it very much, but there’s only so many windows in my home, and you only need so many dust catchers,” she said.
When your hobby and occupation are one and the same, there is that tendency to create a plethora of work. With more stained-glass pieces than she knew what to do with, La Lond knew she could use her talent to help local charities, but she didn’t know how to go about it. “You feel foolish standing out on a street corner saying, ‘Hey! I’ll make you something if you’re a good guy,’ ” she said.
That changed when she read a story about Jay Litchfield, a local charity auctioneer. That gave her a connection into the charity world, but there was still another problem. “Someone can fall in love with a piece, but will need it three inches smaller or in a different color,” she said. So La Lond and Litchfield came up with a plan to auction her services, allowing the purchaser the ability to give her their specifications. “People come to me and pick out patterns and colors. It’s worked out wonderfully” she said.
