Ostrich waste products made into mosaics are cracking open markets in Europe, Australia and California, writes Judy Bryant
CANNY Klein Karoo ostrich farmers have over the years developed markets for the giant birds’ beautiful white plumes, their stippled leather and, more recently, their low fat meat. Now, even broken eggshells that used to be thrown away after the chicks hatched are being transformed into objects of beauty.
Ostrich eggshell mosaics, made into products such as bangles, frames, mirrors and tables, are the brainchild of Prince Albert artist Gideon Engelbrecht. He has spent more than a decade perfecting the labour-intensive process.
