City blocks This week: 500 block, Bainbridge Street -Isaiah Zagar

CENTER CITY. Just west of the bustling promenade where Fifth Street and Passyunk Avenue converge, the feel of nearby South Street is everywhere.

And to no surprise, several of the businesses along the 500 block of Bainbridge Street have been “Zagarfied.”

One of the city’s most orginal artists currently living and working here, Isaiah Zagar has encased at least two buildings along the stretch in his unmistakable mosaic tile designs.

Daniel Ascher, who runs his family carpeting business Carlos Carpet Service, which has been on the block for 30 years, said Zagar gave his father’s building a surprise makeover 12 years ago.

“My father had been bugging him for a while to do something with the building,” Ascher said. “Then we went on vacation and when we got back, the whole front of the building was done, well except for a tiny portion.”
